The Artificial Intelligence, Modeling and Simulation (AIMS) certificate undergraduate program is hosted by the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Iowa. The official website is here. The AIMS undergraduate certificate program requires 18 semester hours (s.h.) of credits, including two required courses, three elective courses selected from the list, and a capstone design project.
Biomedical Engineering (BME) students can earn the AIMS undergraduate certificate using the courses listed below (or others from the AIMS certificate website linked above). If planned appropriately, BME students can complete the certificate within the required hours for the BME degree.
1. Required courses:
- MATH:3800 Introduction to Numerical Methods
- ENGR:3110 Intro to AI and Machine Learning
2. These BME courses can be utilized for the AIMS electives:
- BME:3260 Quantitative Physiology
- BME:4310 Computational Biochemistry
- BME:5240 Deep Learning in Medical Imaging (DLMI)
- BME:5335 Computational Bioinformatics
- BME:5441 Num & Stat Methods for Bioengr
- BME:5525 Cardiopulmonary Design & Modeling
- BME:5620 Intro to Applied Biomedical Finite Element
- Please get in touch with Prof. Xiao (shaoping-xiao@uiowa.edu) if students (especially in the “Computational Bioengineering” focus area) want to use other BME electives for substitution.
3. The following courses can be utilized for the capstone course:
- BME:4910 BME Senior Design I
- BME:4920 BME Senior Design II
- At the beginning of the project, students are advised to email Professor Xiao to confirm the details of the AIMS component for their senior design project.
Students need to declare the AIMS undergraduate certificate through their MyUI account. They can contact Prof. Xiao (shaoping-xiao@uiowa.edu), the director of the AIMS UG certificate program, to discuss questions about the certificate or how to submit any course substitutions for courses not listed. At the end of the semester, students should use the workflow form to submit their AIMS statement via the provided link (note that submission of the entire final senior design report is not required).
