Three University of Iowa College of Engineering researchers were honored among this year’s Staff Council Awardees for achievements ranging from excellence in service to accomplishments that significantly benefited the university.

Tom “Mach” Schnell, University of Iowa professor of industrial and systems engineering and incoming director of the Iowa Technology Institute, is among six faculty members selected by the Iowa Board of Regents for extraordinary contributions and sustained record of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service.

Edward A. Sander, a renowned University of Iowa scholar in the areas of tissue engineering and multiscale mechanics, has been inducted as a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), an organization representing the top minds in the field. 

David Cwiertny, University of Iowa engineering professor, was honored for leading several public health initiatives to improve the quality of Iowa’s drinking water, including the Iowa Get the Lead Out water-testing program

University of Iowa ECE Professor and DEO Gary Christensen wins the prestigious the President and Provost Award for Teaching Excellence, recognizing exceptional and ongoing contributions to student learning and success.

Richard Hardin, a mechanical engineering research scientist at the University of Iowa Solidification Laboratory, has been honored by the Steel Founders’ Society of America for contributions to the field.

Kumar Vijay Mishra, who earned a PhD in electrical engineering at University of Iowa in 2015, was selected for the 2024 IEEE SPS Pierre-Simon Laplace Early Career Technical Achievement Award.

Jun Wang, University of Iowa’s Lichtenberger Family Chair in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, was awarded the 2024 Joanne Simpson Medal for mid-career scientists in recognition of significant contributions to Earth and space science.

Tyler Bell, University of Iowa, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, is part of an interdisciplinary team selected for an Innovation in Teaching and Technology Award to use artificial intelligence to improve behavior intervention.
