Admission Requirements
For admission to the College of Engineering, transfer applicants must have:
- A cumulative GPA of at least 2.50, and a GPA of at least 2.50 in courses required for an engineering degree, from at least one semester of University of Iowa coursework or 24 semester hours of college credit earned after high school.
- Completion of MATH:1550 Engineering Calculus I, or the equivalent, with a C- or higher.
- Completion of at least one of the following, or their equivalents, with a C- or higher.
- CHEM:1110 Principles of Chemistry I
- PHYS:1611 Introductory Physics I
- ENGR:1100 Introduction to Engineering Problem Solving
- ENGR:1300 Introduction to Engineering Computing
A grade of C– or higher is required for non-University of Iowa transfer coursework to count toward an engineering degree.
Students with fewer than 24 semester hours will be considered for admission through individual review based on a combination of high school and college academic records and may not be held to completion of all coursework requirements above.
Students who have previously obtained a bachelor’s degree and are seeking to enroll in engineering as a second bachelor's degree are required to have a 2.50 cumulative GPA, but do not need to have completed the specified coursework required for transfer admission.
Next Steps: Students from outside the University of Iowa
- Meet the minimum admission requirements listed above.
- Apply online for admission.
- Submit an official transcript from every college or university you have attended. See the Application Process page for additional details.
- Review the Transfer Courses page to learn how coursework may transfer to the University of Iowa.
- After you are admitted to the College of Engineering and your transcripts have been received and evaluated, request a degree audit on MyUI to see how your transfer coursework applies toward your degree requirements.
- Email engr-admissions@uiowa.edu with questions about transfer course applicability.
Next Steps: Current University of Iowa students
- Meet the minimum admission requirements listed above.
- Complete the Change of College Application on MyUI.
- Request a "What If" degree audit on MyUI to see how your completed coursework may apply toward Engineering degree requirements.
- Once admitted to the College of Engineering, call 319-335-5763 to schedule an academic advising appointment with an Engineering advisor.
Take Engineering courses prior to admission:
Students may be able to enroll in select Engineering courses before being admitted to the College of Engineering.
- New first-year students beginning in a fall semester may enroll directly in ENGR:1100 Introduction to Engineering Problem Solving (3 s.h.). ENGR:1100 is a required introductory course for all new first-year students admitted to the College of Engineering. Transfer students who have not completed ENGR:1100 or an equivalent course prior to admission may be required to complete an approved higher-level Engineering course as a substitution.
- ENGR:1300 Introduction to Engineering Computing (3 s.h.) is open to students across the University and is required for all Engineering degrees.
- Students may also request special permission to enroll in up to three 2000-level or above Engineering courses (ENGR, BME, CBE, CEE, ECE, ISE, or ME) before admission to the College of Engineering. Approval is based on completion of course prerequisites and seat availability.
