Steps to Studying Abroad

  • Discover Study Abroad

    Complete Discover Study Abroad: https://international.uiowa.edu/study-abroad/first-steps.

  • Explore Programs

    Use our program search tool or visit our Major Advising Pages to find programs that are right for you. This list is a starting point, your advisor might have updated options to review with you.

  • Schedule an appointment with an advisor

    Within one (1) business day of completing Discover Study Abroad, you will receive an email with the name of your study abroad advisor and instructions for scheduling an appointment. You will be assigned to the advisor who covers your primary major.

  • Apply for a passport 

    Passport processing takes months, so don't wait to apply! Most passports are good for 10 years.

    Note: if you have a passport but it was issued before you were 16, you'll most likely need to get a new one.

  • Get approved

    Review the Course Equivalency Page and complete the Request for Course Review, if needed.

  • Apply

    Apply to the study abroad program of your choice and to any available scholarships/financial aid.

  • Confirm participation and prepare 

    Attend your pre-departure meeting and arrange the necessary travel documents for your program.

  • Go abroad

    Have fun!

  • Share

    Promote your experience to prospective students. Submit pictures and stories to be shared on various Global Engineering social media sites
