About the program
The U2G Undergraduate-to-Graduate program at the University of Iowa offers students an accelerated path to BSE/MS degrees in civil and environmental engineering (CEE).
Once students complete the requirements for a bachelor's degree, they are granted a BSE, and they normally complete an MS one year later. U2G students may:
- Apply three engineering courses (9 s.h.) toward both the BSE and MS degree requirements
- Take an additional 3 s.h. of graduate coursework before completing a BSE
- Attend and participate in departmental graduate seminars
Why U2G may be right for you
The advantages of continuing your education through the MS degree in CEE are clear:
- Get that perfect starting job: Employers look for graduates with advanced degrees for specialized positions in CEE. The best job opportunities as an environmental engineer, structural engineer, transportation engineer, or water resources engineer go to those with an MS degree.
- Save time and money: An accelerated path to obtaining both BSE and MS degrees will get you to that perfect job sooner, saving time and reducing overall tuition costs.
- Career advancement: An MS degree in civil and environmental engineering can open doors to higher-paying jobs and leadership positions in the future.
Scholarships are available for CEE U2G students
Students accepted to the CEE U2G program can receive up to $4,000 for tuition towards their MS degree! Apply for a Professional MS Graduate Incentive Scholarship by mid-December for the following academic year.
Who is eligible for the U2G program?
To be eligible, students must:
- Have completed at least 80 s.h.
- Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25.
The intent of the program is to allow an early entrance to graduate school for our most academically able students.
How do I apply?
Students must apply to graduate admission before enrolling in courses that count towards both degrees. A GRE score is NOT required.
Submit your online application to the Office of Admissions by May 15 in the spring of your junior year.
Where can I get more information?
The U2G program is primarily intended for students interested in pursuing the MS/nonthesis degree option and completing the degree within one year after receiving a BSE. At your next academic advising meeting, talk to your faculty advisor about U2G.
If you are conducting research with a CEE faculty member, talk with them about whether the MS/thesis degree is the right option for you.
