An honorary organization affiliated with Civil and Environmental Engineering, Chi Epsilon was founded in 1922 to recognize and honor civil engineering students and professionals. It is widely recognized in the profession and has initiated over 116,948 active members. Students and professionals are selected to become members based on recognition of their scholarship, character, practicality and sociability, considered by Chi Epsilon to be the four primary traits of a successful engineer. For student members, scholarship is determined by being in the top third of their junior or senior class.

Continental Crossings is associated with the nonprofit organization of Engineers in Action (EIA).  Historically, their primary focus has been to connect students to projects with EIA in the form of building pedestrian footbridges in Bolivia, Eswatini, and Ecuador. Their main goal is to educate and train students in various aspects of international travel and service, such as the importance of cross-cultural communication and the risks of voluntourism. On campus, they work on projects that will impact the local community, host workshops, and connect students with opportunities such as internships with EIA, in addition to our international travel and service trainings.

FACE exists to create a community on campus with the purpose of improving the networking opportunities for women and their allies within the civil engineering department at the University of Iowa. The goal of this group is to empower and unify women pursuing a degree in civil engineering, by creating a safe place for women to study, network, and talk about the experiences and challenges faced in this field.
