University of Iowa engineers investigating the deadly 2022 Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai volcano in the South Pacific Ocean – the largest underwater explosion ever recorded – discovered differences in how volcanoes in the ocean affect Earth’s climate compared to landlocked volcanoes.
