The Roy J. Carver Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Iowa invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty appointment with an anticipated start date of Fall 2022. Our department seeks visionary individuals who are integrating engineering, the biological sciences, and translational medicine to promote scientific discovery and the development of clinical technologies that advance healthcare. We aim to enhance the department’s integrative research and educational programs by hiring a core faculty member with research and teaching expertise in the areas of respiratory and pulmonary biomedical engineering.

The rank of assistant professor is targeted, but all ranks will be considered. Applicants are expected to have a doctoral degree in biomedical engineering or a related discipline.

The Roy J. Carver Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Iowa is experiencing a period of unprecedented growth.  A recent philanthropic gift to the department from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust has provided resources to hire several new faculty, rapidly increase the size of the doctoral program, and develop new research foci in the areas of respiratory and pulmonary biomedical engineering. The Department is located in a new, state-of-the-art, 65,000 square foot annex connected to the Seamans Center for the Engineering Arts and Sciences. The Seamans Center is located centrally on campus and is close to the Colleges of Dentistry, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Public Health.

The College of Engineering has an established international reputation for biomedical research led by four of its research units:  the Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, the Iowa Institute for Biomedical Imaging, the Iowa Technology Institute, and IIHR—Hydroscience & Engineering. These centers help fuel a highly interdisciplinary research enterprise across campus that includes the Carver College of Medicine.  The Carver College of Medicine is highly ranked among public medical schools in NIH dollars and NIH grants per faculty member, with over 250 faculty laboratories in 12 dedicated buildings including 450,000 square feet of wet bench space. The opportunities to impact both fundamental and translational biomedical research at the University of Iowa are many.

The successful candidate is expected to develop an internationally recognized research program, to participate in the teaching and service missions of the department, and to follow the University of Iowa’s strong tradition of collaboration across disciplines.  The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent communication, teaching, and leadership skills to the benefit of our department’s mission.  A strong commitment to graduate and undergraduate teaching, advising, and student success is essential. Teaching responsibilities will include participation in and development of both undergraduate and graduate courses, and strong engagement in a core curriculum that serves to define biomedical engineering for future generations. Supervision of doctoral students and academic advising of trainees at all levels is also expected.

Iowa City is one of the most livable cities in America with a moderate cost of living, nationally ranked public schools and healthcare facilities, numerous recreation and leisure options, and diverse cultural and employment opportunities.

The University of Iowa understands the link between diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and excellence in education.  We are proud to be the first public institution that admitted both men and women regardless of race (since our founding in 1847), and the first to extend benefits to employees’ domestic partners (in 1992). As demonstrated by the University’s 2019-2021 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Action Plan, we embrace our responsibility to create a welcoming and inclusive campus culture so that all community members are able to realize their full potential. Faculty members in the College of Engineering contribute to this mission by designing curricula, research programs, and engagement opportunities that advance understanding of DEI and emphasize the value of global citizenship. Within the application, candidates are asked to submit a DEI statement describing their past, current, and/or future contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion. As part of this statement, candidates can describe how their research, teaching, mentoring and/or professional service activities have (or will) advance DEI and promote social justice.
