Xuan Song, an assistant professor of industrial and systems engineering at the University of Iowa, is among 22 recipients of the 2022 Sandra L. Bouckley Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineers from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME). Song, whose work focuses on innovations in 3D printing, is also a faculty researcher at the Iowa Technology Institute, a research arm of the UI College of Engineering.

The award presented by SME recognizes exceptional contributions and accomplishments in manufacturing and is reserved for those aged 35 and younger.

“These young professionals have demonstrated their ability to design, develop and execute new, impactful technologies within academic institutions, research labs and across a variety of industries,” Robert Willig, SME executive director and CEO, said in a statement announcing the awards. “We’re proud to recognize their outstanding achievements in academia and industry.”

Song joined UI in 2016 with a focus on additive manufacturing – more commonly known as 3D printing. He directs the Additive Manufacturing-Integrated Product Realization Laboratory (AMPRL), which is developing emerging technologies with a variety of applications including aerospace, military, and medical.

SME noted:

Song’s “current research interest focuses on additive manufacturing of advanced materials for extreme environments, such as ultra-high-temperature ceramics, high-strain-rate piezoelectric ceramics and energetic composites. Song holds several U.S. patents in the field of manufacturing and developed several additive manufacturing technologies that have been featured in top-rated journals and reported by media outlets. He led multiple projects funded by different external agencies, including NSF, DoD, DOE and others in the private sector. At UIowa, Song has taught courses in manufacturing processes, mechatronics and design of experiments.”

The 2022 award namesake is 2017 SME President Sandra L. Bouckley, FSME, P.Eng., interim SME CEO and former vice president of manufacturing systems, supply chain management and lean at GKN Driveline Americas.

The cohort includes international representation, although it is primarily made up of honorees from the United States. Learn more about the award at https://www.sme.org/aboutsme/newsroom/press-releases/2022/sme-announces-....
