Gregory Carmichael, Karl Kammermeyer Professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, co-director of the UI Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research, and director of the University of Iowa Informatics Initiative, has been reappointed as chair of the Environmental Pollution and Atmospheric Chemistry Scientific Steering Committee (EPAC SSC).

The committee consists of leading experts tasked to assist, guide, and advise the commission activities related to environmental pollution and atmospheric chemistry and the Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) Programme.

EPAC SSC is part of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) with 191 Member States and Territories. It is the UN system's authoritative voice on the state and behavior of the Earth's atmosphere, its interaction with the land and oceans, the weather and climate it produces and the resulting distribution of water resources.

WMO plays a leading role in international efforts to monitor and protect the environment through its programs. In collaboration with other United Nations agencies and National Meteorological and Hydrological Services, WMO supports the implementation of a number of environmental conventions and is instrumental in providing advice and assessments to governments on related matters.
