The UI Public Policy Center is hosting a special screening 6:30-8:30 p.m. September 24 of the documentary, "Woke Up Black" at Shambaugh Auditorium on the University of Iowa campus.
The film documents a two-year period in the lives of five black young people, ages 16-21, capturing both day-to-day life events such as family gatherings and interactions with the justice system, as well as major milestones such as high school graduations and first days at college. The film focuses on the youths' ideas and opinions in their own words, and underscores the humanity that we all share regardless of race or age.
One of the film’s subjects, Morgan Price, is a research assistant in the UI Human Factors and Vehicle Safety research program. An alumnna of the College of Engineering, she is now pursuing a master's degree in Public Health/Injury Epidemiology at the UI. Price, two other of the film’s subjects, and Mary Morten, the producer/director, will participate in a panel discussion after the film.
The screening is free and open to the public.
