The Hanson Center for Communication helps Hawkeye engineering students develop great communication skills. Our programming directors host weekly groups aimed at honing writing and presentation skills, and we also work with students by appointment. Our goal is to support students seeking to confidently and effectively communicate their engineering solutions.
For Undergraduate Students
Weekly Drop-In Improv Sessions
One of the best ways to build confidence and ease when communicating is through learning the art of improvisation. Programming Director Kristy Hartsgrove Mooers will hold drop in improv clinics once a week in the Hanson Center for students to learn basic warmups and short form improvisation games, no experience needed. We will have a good time while challenging ourselves and building solid communication skills!

Fall 2026 Graduate Writing Group
The Hanson Center for Communication invites you to draft and revise your manuscripts this semester in a writing group with fellow students. No matter what stage your project is in, our group will help you to grow your work with feedback and support. Come for the writing and accountability, stay for the snacks and camaraderie!
- Meet with tutor to discuss writing goals and thesis planning
- Practice your defense presentation
- Just have a space to write
Who’s invited: Engineering Grad Students (MS or PhD)
When does the group meet: MTWTh 1:00 – 3:00 pm **First meeting is August 31st**
Where: Hanson Center Theatre (4650SC)
You’re not required to come every day, just stop in when you’re able to!
