Where are you from?

My dad was career military, so I moved a lot. However, I claim Millington, Tennessee, as my home because that’s where my parents retired at.

Was there a specific moment or person that inspired you to choose engineering as a career path?

My physics professor at DMACC, Nancy Woods, was a major inspiration to me. As a non-traditional student going back to school to start a new career, I never imagined it would be in engineering. She encouraged me to keep at it. The most inspiring thing she said to me was that “sometimes it’s not about being smart but about perseverance.” Because of those words I have been working hard all these years and am now a PhD candidate in civil and environmental engineering.

What drew you to the University of Iowa?

The University has amazing research opportunities, especially within the civil and environmental engineering department. I was really drawn to the research and work being conducted by the Iowa Superfund Research Program. With my background being in agricultural engineering specifically looking at land and water issues, I knew that rounding out my studies with a focus in air pollution would provide me with well-rounded knowledge and hands-on experience I would need in my future career. I especially like how the ISRP works with many different agencies and communities to accomplish their research goals. A lot of the research projects included many individuals from various backgrounds to include students, physicians, toxicologists, and engineers.

What makes the University of Iowa a good fit for you?

My major professor Keri Hornbuckle has been amazing since my first interview. She allows me the flexibility to take courses that interest me and that will benefit my career development. I also have the freedom to conduct my research my way along with her expert guidance. The professors and staff within our department have a wealth of knowledge and experience in their prospective fields and they are always willing to provide their help and advice when I need it. I especially enjoy how professors are involved with their students’ academic and research advancement. I have never felt like I was left to figure out things on my own. If my major professor didn’t have an answer for me, she made sure to find me the help I need or connect me with the individual who can help me. I have always had a wealth of support here at the university.

What activities are you involved in besides academics?

I am a high school women’s wrestling coach and stay pretty involved in the wrestling community.

What accomplishment are you most proud of during your time at Iowa?

I am proud of how I have been able to work with community members while conducting research. I was awarded the President’s Student Leadership Award for integrating community engagement best practices into my research as a graduate student at Iowa.

What are your plans after graduation?

I would like to work with the government. I’d be interested in environmental policy regulation or working as a project manager on clean-up projects. I am also interested in teaching at a university.

To someone considering enrolling in engineering at Iowa, what would you tell them about your experience?

I have had a very well-rounded experience here at the University of Iowa. As a graduate student I can take courses that will enhance my skills as I look forward to entering the workforce. I was able to conduct my research while working with the community and other agencies, which allowed me great networking opportunities and allowed me to also learn from sources outside of the classroom. I have also created great relationships with other students, staff, and professors who will be a great resource to me even after I graduate. Also, I feel that even after I graduate, the University of Iowa will be a home I can come back to for any support I may need. Our department especially loves to invite alumni back to talk to their research group and students about the work they are doing after graduation.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself:

I love Renaissance faires and festivals and will travel all over the country with my family to attend them. I enjoy making our costumes and attire for the various themes the festivals have.
