There will be a celebration of the opening of the newly renovated offices of the Iowa Geological Survey (part of IIHR—Hydroscience & Engineering) and to meet new staff. The public is invited to an open house from 3:00–5:00 p.m. October 10, at the IGS offices on the third floor of Trowbridge Hall (123 North Capitol St., Iowa City) on the University of Iowa campus. The open house will include informal tours of the new space, educational displays, and refreshments.

Geology enthusiasts of all ages can stop by to see some of the geological samples on display, including information on the Decorah meteorite impact structure, Iowa-specific mineral and fossil specimens, geophysical equipment, and more. Alumni and friends on campus for Homecoming Weekend are especially welcome!

In early 2014, the Iowa Geological Survey became part of IIHR—Hydroscience & Engineering, creating a new Iowa Geological Survey (IGS) under the auspices of IIHR. The transition is now complete. The capabilities of the IGS team include groundwater modeling, mapping of Iowa’s earth and mineral resources, innovative geophysical skills, and more.
