What are the changes to the Engineering Electronics Shop?

Effective fall 2024, the Engineering Electronics Shop will no longer provide direct retail sales of parts and supplies.

Why is this change being made?

In order to be in compliance with business policies, we will no longer buy and resell parts and supplies.

What services does the Engineering Electronics Shop provide?

The Engineering Electronics Shop will continue to provide services such as 3D printing, consultations, training classes, laser etching, equipment design, and prototype development. In addition, in fall 2024, we are introducing a new service dedicated to item specification as described in the next question.

How will students get support for obtaining items needed for projects?

Staff in the Engineering Electronics Shop will assist with identifying student needs and facilitating the procurement process in collaboration with University Shared Services staff. For personal acquisitions, we will provide guidance in specifying items and locating alternative purchasing sources. We will work closely with faculty to anticipate items students will need for projects and how to source them and will also work with instructional lab managers on other items needed for classes.

What will happen to the inventory currently in the Engineering Electronics Shop?

The items are being distributed throughout the college as appropriate, such as to the Lichtenberger Engineering Library and instructional labs.

When will items no longer be sold?

We will end sales of items on August 2, 2024.

How will changes impact research?

Research activities are typically associated with a research grant or some other type of funding. Ordering for research utilizes University Shared Services, and the Engineering Electronics Shop will provide guidance for item specification as described above. Principal investigators should contact their research support staff if they have questions.

Will the Engineering Electronics Shop be reconfigured?

Yes, we are working on reorganizing the space and exploring additional services, equipment, and/or other activities that would be useful for students.

Is there a place for students to provide input on potential new services, equipment, and other future changes?

Yes! Please complete the survey here to provide your input.
