BME undergraduate students can register for BME:3995 Undergraduate Research in Biomedical Engineering and apply up to 3 s.h. of BME:3995 credit towards their focus area elective requirements by submitting a form to the BME director of undergraduate studies.
The form is due by the first Friday of the semester that they take BME:3995 (we encourage students to complete and submit these forms prior to the due date). The form requires the following two documents, which they should complete in advance with their research mentor (mentor signatures are required):
- BME:3995 Syllabus, which requires a project title, a 150-word description of the project, and includes a grading rubric to be used by the mentor at the end of the semester.
- BME:3995 Project Mentor & Agreement, which requires a summary of goals for the mentor and the student as well as a brief description of the intended working hours and meeting frequency/format throughout the semester.
BME:3995 notes and requirements:
- Students cannot receive financial compensation for the work performed under BME:3995 (note that the course is graded on an A-F basis).
- Students can register for 1 to 3 s.h. and the course is repeatable. Only a total of 3 s.h. may be counted towards the focus area elective requirement but students can spread this out over multiple semesters (ex. 2 s.h. in one semester and 1 s.h. in another semester).
- Per university guidelines, 1 s.h. of credit is equal to 3 hours of work per week over a 15-week semester.
- To receive permission to register for BME:3995, the student will need to ask their research mentor to send an email to the BME office or COE Registrar stating that they approve the student to do research for them in the upcoming semester. Their research mentor will be added as the instructor for the course.
Students are not guaranteed a project just because they have an interest in utilizing this option. It is up to the student to seek out a research mentor (or work with their current research mentor) who is willing to supervise the student project and work with the student to complete the required documentation for receiving credit towards their BME degree (as described above).
