Hunter Rouse was instrumental in reshaping hydraulics into a rigorous engineering discipline firmly based on fundamental fluid mechanics. Rouse initiated UI classes and teaching laboratories in the subject. He also designed research instrumentation, authored significant textbooks, and engaged in history research. Rouse received a steady stream of federal grants that stimulated fundamental research and educational programs. His fame, stature, and travels around the globe established IIHR’s international reputation and attracted numerous students. Rouse’s final UI years were lived in the Dean’s office, where he applied his high standards and single-minded focus to lead the College to new levels of excellence and achievement.
