Faculty Excellence Award for Research
The Faculty Excellence Award for Research will be presented to a faculty member in the College of Engineering to recognize research activities, accomplishments, and significant contributions to the advancement of engineering science and technology. The contributions may be in the form of books, journal papers, inventions, or other scholarly activities.
*Examples of topics that could be discussed include: quality of the nominee’s research program, accomplishments to date, and plans for further research; importance of the nominee’s research and how it has advanced the field, its contributions to the larger body of scholarly inquiry, how it has facilitated opportunities for collaboration across disciplines and/or with other institutions, and the importance of the work to society; nominee’s academic reputation, honors and awards, peer recognition, membership in prestigious organizations, and significant speaking appointments and publications; nominee’s devotion to research efforts, milestone achievements, interaction with colleagues in the field, and commitment to the University of Iowa and the College of Engineering.
Eligibility: The nominees for this award should be faculty (tenure-track or instructional track) in the College of Engineering.
Nomination materials: The following make up the nomination packet and process for each nominee.
- Nominator notifies nominee of intent to nominate OR nominee requests nominator to submit a nomination.
- The nominee shall provide the following to the nominator (sent as pdfs via email):
- Brief, specific statement of nominee’s research activities and accomplishments* (2 pages maximum).
- Abbreviated research-focused CV (5 pages maximum).
- Attestation agreeing to nomination (link provided within nomination form in Workflow).
- The nominator shall provide the following:
- A nominating letter that provides a clear and compelling explanation* of why the nominee should be selected for this award (2 pages maximum).
- Optional: One letter of support from another faculty member that provides a clear and compelling explanation* of why the nominee should be selected for this award (1 page maximum).
- Nominator will submit nomination form in Workflow, attaching all nomination materials.
Faculty Excellence Award for Teaching
The Faculty Excellence Award for Teaching will be presented to a tenure track or non-tenure track faculty member in the College of Engineering who has demonstrated unusually significant and meritorious achievement in teaching during the past three academic years.
*Examples of topics which could be discussed include: effectiveness of the nominee’s classroom teaching, including innovative teaching methods; Impact of the nominee’s informal teaching activities (mentoring, advising, involvement of students in scholarly activities, etc.); nominee’s impact on curricular development; nominee’s involvement on continuous assessment and improvement of the departmental educational programs; student recognition and appreciation of the nominee’s teaching efforts, etc.
Eligibility: The nominees for this award should be faculty (tenure-track or instructional track) in the College of Engineering.

- Brief statement of the nominee’s teaching accomplishments (2 pages maximum). The following should be included in the nominee’s statement:
- A statement of their contributions to excellence in teaching and students’ learning.
- Description of notable teaching activities (workshops, mentoring, advising, curriculum development, etc.).
- Description of how the nominee’s scholarly work enhances their teaching.
- Abbreviated CV highlighting teaching activities, including courses taught (include class size and ACE scores) (5 pages maximum).
- Student comments portion of the ACE forms for any 2 courses of level 5000 or lower.
- Attestation agreeing to nomination (link provided within nomination form in Workflow).
- Brief statement of the nominee’s teaching accomplishments (2 pages maximum). The following should be included in the nominee’s statement:
- The nominator shall provide the following:
- A nominating letter that describes the nominee’s teaching contributions and provides a clear and compelling explanation* of why the nominee should be selected for this award (2 pages maximum).
- Students’ letter(s) of support: Formal supporting letter(s) (not emails) written and signed by a student or group of students describing the nominee’s strengths and qualities as a teacher. Students must specify in their letter the course, semester, and year the nominee taught them. Up to 5 letters will be accepted.
- Nominator will submit nomination form in Workflow, attaching all nomination materials.
Faculty Excellence Award for Service
The Faculty Excellence Award for Service will be presented to a faculty member in the College of Engineering who has made significant service contributions to the College of Engineering and/or the University of Iowa. The contributions may be efforts over an extended period of time or an individual significant activity.
*Examples of topics which could be discussed include: service to the department, college, and university (committees, workgroups, task forces, search committees, etc.); professional service (offices held, membership on governing boards and advisory boards, membership on editorial boards, journal editorship, conference organizer, etc.) and any other service activities that enhance the mission of the college/university.
Eligibility: The nominees for this award should be faculty (tenure-track or instructional track) in the College of Engineering.
Nomination materials: The following make up the nomination packet and process for each nominee.
- Nominator notifies nominee of intent to nominate OR nominee requests nominator to submit a nomination.
- The nominee shall provide the following:
- Brief statement of nominee’s service activities and accomplishments* (2 pages maximum).

Faculty Early Career Excellence Award
The Faculty Early Career Excellence Award will be presented to a tenure-track assistant/associate professor in the College of Engineering to recognize scholarly activities, accomplishments, and significant contributions to teaching, research, and service that are remarkable for someone early in their academic career.
*Examples of topics which could be discussed include: quality of the nominee’s research program and accomplishments to date; evidence of nominee’s excellence in teaching/service; nominee’s academic reputation, honors and awards, peer recognition, and significant speaking appointments and publications; nominee’s devotion to research efforts, milestone achievements, interaction with colleagues in the field, and commitment through service to the University of Iowa and the College of Engineering.
Eligibility: The nominees for this award should be assistant professors, or associate professors in the first two academic years post-promotion.
Nomination materials: The following make up the nomination packet and process for each nominee.
- Nominator notifies nominee of intent to nominate OR nominee requests nominator to submit a nomination.
- The nominee shall provide the following to the nominator (send as pdfs via email):
- Brief, specific statement of nominee’s research, teaching and service activities and accomplishments* (2 pages maximum).

Staff Excellence Award for Research
The Staff Excellence Award for Research will be presented to a staff member in the College of Engineering to recognize research activities, accomplishments, and significant contributions to the advancement of engineering science and technology. The contributions may be in the form of books, journal papers, inventions, advancing/supporting funded projects, or other scholarly activities.
*Examples of topics which could be discussed include: quality of the nominee’s research program, accomplishments to date, and plans for further research; importance of the nominee’s research and how it has advanced the field, its contributions to the larger body of scholarly inquiry, how it has facilitated opportunities for collaboration across disciplines and/or with other institutions, and the importance of the work to society; nominee’s research reputation, honors and awards, peer recognition, membership in prestigious organizations, and significant speaking appointments and publications; nominee’s devotion to research efforts, milestone achievements, interaction with colleagues in the field, and commitment to the University of Iowa and the College of Engineering.
Eligibility: The nominees for this award should be research scientists/research engineers/other researchers in regular staff positions in the College of Engineering.
Nomination materials: The following make up the nomination packet and process for each nominee.
- Nominator notifies nominee of intent to nominate OR nominee requests nominator to submit a nomination.
- Nominee shall provide:
- A statement of their research accomplishments* (2 pages maximum).
- A CV highlighting research accomplishments (5 pages maximum).
- Attestation agreeing to nomination (link provided within nomination form in Workflow).
- Nominator shall provide:
- A statement of nominee’s research accomplishments making a compelling case* for why the nominee should receive the Staff Research Award (2 pages maximum).
- Optional: A letter of support from a faculty, staff, or student in the College of Engineering (who is not the nominator) attesting to the staff member’s contributions to conduct of research. Up to 2 letters of support will be accepted.
- Nominator will submit nomination form in Workflow, attaching all nomination materials.
Staff Excellence Award for Community Engagement
The Staff Excellence Award for Community Engagement will be presented to a staff member in the College of Engineering whose volunteer or professional service activities demonstrate outstanding service to the College of Engineering, the university community, their profession, or the wider community, and whose imagination and dedication go beyond the scope of their position in the College of Engineering. The contributions may be efforts over an extended period of time or an individual significant activity.
*Examples of outstanding service include: service to the college and university (committees, workgroups, task forces, etc.), professional service (offices held, memberships in professional organizations, conference organizer and/or presenter, etc.), or volunteer service related to representing the College of Engineering to the broader community and beyond the scope of their position in the college.
Eligibility: The nominees for this award should be regular staff in the College of Engineering. Self-nominations will also be considered.
Nomination materials: The following make up the nomination packet and process for each nominee.
- Nominator shall provide:
- An initial nominating letter that provides a clear and compelling explanation of why the nominee should be selected for this award (600 words maximum).
- A letter of support providing additional endorsements from a faculty, staff, or student in the College of Engineering (who is not the nominator) that provides a clear and compelling explanation of why the nominee should be selected for this award. (600 words maximum; Up to 2 letters of support will be accepted.)

Staff Excellence Award for Student Success
The Staff Excellence Award for Student Success will be presented to a staff member in the College of Engineering who has made significant contributions to create an outstanding student experience. This award is meant to recognize staff members who directly or indirectly contribute to student success.
Examples of student success contributions include: fostering a welcoming and respectful environment among staff, faculty and students at Iowa; contributing to a world-class engineering education; being a positive, accessible, and helpful staff member to all students; advocating for students in or outside the classroom/academic environment; providing opportunities outside the classroom for research and growth.
Eligibility: The nominees for this award should be regular staff in the College of Engineering. Self-nominations will be considered.

Mary Sheedy Staff Excellence Award
Mary Sheedy Staff Excellence Award will be presented to a staff member in the College of Engineering who provides outstanding service to the College of Engineering, has a positive attitude that impacts and improves the work atmosphere within the college, leaves a lasting impression with the college and its constituents, and demonstrates a commitment to the college and its mission, and models the college's core values. The award honors the late Mary Sheedy, secretary in the Office of the Dean from 1928-1969.
Eligibility: The nominees for this award should be regular staff in the College of Engineering. Self-nominations will also be considered.
Nomination materials: The following make up the nomination packet and process for each nominee.
- Nominator shall provide:
- An initial nominating letter that provides a clear and compelling explanation of why the nominee should be selected for this award (600 words maximum).
- A letter of support providing additional endorsements from a faculty, staff, or student in the College of Engineering (who is not the nominator) that provides a clear and compelling explanation of why the nominee should be selected for this award (600 words maximum).

PhD Student Excellence Award
The PhD Student Excellence Award will be presented to a PhD student/recent PhD graduate in the College of Engineering to recognize research activities, accomplishments, and significant contributions to the advancement of engineering science and technology. The contributions may be in the form of books, journal/conference papers, inventions, advancing/supporting funded projects, or other scholarly activities.
*Examples of topics which could be discussed include: Quality and impact of the nominee’s PhD dissertation work; attitudes and accomplishments that make the nominee deserving of the award; external recognition of the impact of the nominee’s work (best paper awards or other recognition, citations to papers, quality of journals in which nominee’s papers have appeared, etc.).
Eligibility: The nominees for this award should be a current PhD student OR a recently graduated PhD student (not more than one AY post-graduation).
Nomination materials: The following make up the nomination packet and process for each nominee.
- Nominator notifies nominee of intent to nominate OR Nominee requests Nominator to submit a nomination.
- Nominee shall provide:
- A statement of their research accomplishments* (2 pages maximum).
- A CV highlighting research accomplishments (5 pages maximum).
- Attestation agreeing to nomination (link provided within nomination form in Workflow).
- Nominator shall provide:
- A statement of nominee’s research accomplishments making a compelling case* for why the nominee should receive the PhD Dissertation Award, providing concise examples (2 pages maximum).
- A letter of support from a faculty/research staff member in the College of Engineering (who is not the nominator; e.g., faculty who served on the PhD thesis committee of the student) attesting to the student’s contributions to research in their chosen field and quality of PhD work. Up to 2 letters of support will be accepted.
