Ann F. McKenna, vice dean of strategic advancement at the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University and professor of engineering in the Polytechnic School, has been named dean of the University of Iowa College of Engineering. She will begin on Aug. 16.

University of Iowa (UI) researchers have set up a high-performance computing core named “Quantum” to simulate a quantum computer and perform medical image analysis using quantum-inspired science.

Fatima Toor was announced as one of 77 new senior members of SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics. The professional organization profiled Toor as one of the optics and photonics women leaders.

Milan Sonka has been named a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), the organization announced on December 7, 2021. He is the third UI faculty member ever named an NAI Fellow.

The University of Iowa's Computer Science and Engineering major has received its inaugural accreditation from ABET, the worldwide gold standard for producing graduates ready for technical fields. It is one of only 13 programs nationwide and one of two in the Big 10 conference.

Five research teams at the University of Iowa have been awarded funds in the first round of the Jumpstarting Tomorrow initiative, a pilot grant and community-building program supporting innovative and collaborative research. Each team received $150,000 to explore strategic research investments, made possible through funding from the UI utility public-private partnership. The projects cover a range of interdisciplinary topics such as addressing biases in AI healthcare models, positioning Iowa as an energy exporter, studying cultural artifacts using advanced imaging technologies, advancing quantum simulation, and assessing the role of public libraries in disaster resilience.

Qing Zou, a PhD candidate at the University of Iowa's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has received the Best Paper Award at the IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (IEEE-ISBI) 2021. Zou's winning paper introduces a deep learning approach called the "Gen-SToRM" model, which improves free-breathing cardiac MRI scans, allowing doctors to make informed decisions and improve treatment plans for patients who cannot hold their breath during the examination.
