Industrial & Systems Engineering Department Chair

The University of Iowa (UI) College of Engineering is excited to announce a national search for a Professor and Chair of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE), to begin August of 2023.

The new Chair (Department Executive Officer - DEO) is expected to lead the department, enhance its visibility, promote high-quality research, and effectively recruit new undergraduate and graduate students. The DEO will shape the next generation of interdisciplinary industrial and systems engineering related to human factors, smart manufacturing, data analytics, operations research, health care, and financial engineering. The DEO will coordinate and manage the day-to-day academic operations as well as external connections, including education, research, recruitment, outreach to industry and government entities, and service activities. The department chair (DEO) will be appointed at the level of Professor with Tenure and will report to the Dean.

The College of Engineering is one of 12 colleges at The University of Iowa. Our research environment is highly collaborative and designed to push breakthrough ideas that cross boundaries and challenge assumptions. The highly motivated faculty are engaged in different modes of teaching, research, and service.

The Department Chair (Departmental Executive Officer - DEO) provides strategic leadership and direction for all aspects of the department. The department chair manages the day-to-day academic operations, including educational, research, and service activities. 

The major responsibilities of the Department Chair/DEO include:

  • Establishing a compelling vision that inspires others to engage in setting and executing the strategic direction for the department;
  • Recruiting productive and diverse faculty, promoting excellence in faculty research and educational endeavors, encourages and guides mentorship of faculty;
  • Collaborating with faculty to expand existing and develop new approaches for recruiting undergraduate and graduate students to the ISE program;
  • Fostering a supportive, collaborative, and inclusive teaching, learning, and research environment for faculty, staff, and students;
  • Leading innovation in curriculum and educational programs, teaches courses, and advises students within department and collegiate programs;
  • Maintaining an active scholarship portfolio, including external funding and peer-reviewed publications; knows and respects faculty strengths and inspires their potential;
  • Management of the overall departmental budget and resources, and works with the development office to enhance departmental resources;
  • Serving as a member of the collegiate leadership team that guides strategic initiatives & resource allocation to allow the college to meet its mission, vision/goals;
  • Working collaboratively and effectively with multiple stakeholders to develop and execute the department’s vision and strategic plan; integrating the department’s vision, plan, and goals with those of the college and university; and promotes the department by engaging alumni, industrial representatives, and broader community;
  • Working actively to increase ISE student enrollment at the undergrad and grad level;
  • Facilitating and conducting outreach to external stakeholders (alumni, industry, advisory board, etc.)

Candidates must demonstrate a strong track record of leadership experience, an understanding of the academic and research enterprise, and show enthusiasm for working across engineering disciplines and colleges at the University of Iowa. In addition, demonstrating a strong network across R1 universities and industry is a plus. Direct experience working with research institutes and/or centers is desired. 
Candidates must have a doctorate in industrial engineering or a related field and possess a strong scholarly, funding, and teaching record that merits an appointment to Full Professor at the University of Iowa. Candidates are expected to have a significant record of high-quality and productive research involving extramurally funded projects that include organization and leadership of teams of peers. Candidates must have a commitment to educational excellence; outstanding communication and interpersonal skills that promote transparency, respect, effective problem resolution, and ethical decision-making; an understanding of and commitment to shared governance; and demonstrated engagement in a diverse, equitable, and inclusive academic environment. Desirable qualifications include a scholarly research program aligned with current departmental research thrusts, demonstrated experience building partnerships across academic disciplines, and successful experiences in managing a diverse group of scholars and students to strive for excellence in research, teaching, and service.

The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Iowa is one of six academic units housed within the College of Engineering (CoE). Departmental faculty collaborate with the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, and colleges across campus, including the College of Medicine, Pharmacy, Business, Public Health, and Liberal Arts and Sciences, as well as industrial and government organizations. The department has a diversified portfolio of funding sources through the NSF, DoD, NIH, foundations, and corporations. Our faculty are integrated into interdisciplinary research units: IIHR – Hydroscience and Engineering, Iowa Technology Institute, Public Policy Center, Injury Prevention Research Center, and the National Advanced Driving Simulator, among others.
