The primary goal of the Engineering Focus Area (EFA) course selection is for the student to achieve exposure and depth of study in an area that is complementary to their degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Seven EFA plans are offered as ‘recommended EFAs’. The Civil Engineering Practice EFA is designed for students who want a broad exposure to civil and environmental engineering practice. Four other plans are recommended technical EFAs aligned with four general focus area of the department, Environmental Engineering, Hydraulics and Water Resources, Structures, and Transportation. A Management EFA is recommended as a nontechnical EFA for students interested in the business aspects, and an Urban and Regional Planning is recommended for students interested in planning. In addition, students can propose a custom EFA based on their specific interests.
Students must submit an EFA plan form before or at the time of registering for their first EFA course. For those EFA plans that have already been developed (recommended EFAs), this would be prior to the SPRING TERM OF THEIR JUNIOR YEAR, or the equivalent (~upon completion of 79 s.h.). For the custom EFA plans this may be significantly earlier.
